One out of three prisoners are considered mentally insane, and one out of six jail inmates are labeled mentally insane. These individuals are a vast majority of the inmates in the legal system. Most of the mentally insane inmates are being punished for minor crimes, that are in no way violent. Due to their incompetence these victims do not even comprehend the wrongfulness of their actions. The institutions of jails and prisons are also making their conditions worse because of inefficient or no treatment at all. Not allowing mentally insane people to be incarcerated will allow more resources to withhold criminals of more serious crimes such as murder and rape, because of not needing to supply medications and other treatment for mentally ill inmates. If this dilemma is not solved now, it will continue to manifest itself into a greater problem. Therefore let us help those that can not help themselves.
